Gatorlink Mailbox Service Description

Overview

The CNS Open Systems Group maintains the campus-wide open-access mailbox server. This service is commonly referred to as the incoming mail server, or the Gatorlink mail server.

The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and the Post Office Protocol (POP) can be used by mail clients to retrieve email messages from the server where they are stored.

[Note]SMTP

This section deals with the Gatorlink mail service as it pertains to accessing received mail with IMAP or POP. If you are looking for information about sending mail with smtp.ufl.edu including spam and virus scanning and issues with AOL accepting mail from UF mail servers you should see the SMTP relay section of this website.

Features

This service provides 150MiB of mail storage space for each user.

The full text of all mail messages are indexed on the server. These indices are used by IMAP clients when the user issues a "search" command.

The Sieve mail filtering language, defined in RFC3028, is available to pre-sort messages into different folders upon delivery. Sieve scripts can be maintained with a mail client that understands the MANAGESIEVE protocol.

Users other than students can forward their Gatorlink mail to a mailbox on another host. Mail forwarding can be changed through a web interface.

Recommendations

All modern Mail user Agents (MUAs) are capable of IMAP, which was designed to address shortcomings with POP. The use of POP is discouraged, as it places additional load on the mailbox server.

Users who forward their mail to non-University hosts do so at their own peril. The University uses email for official communications, and all students, faculty and staff are required to read email send to them at their Gatorlink address.

Client Configuration

To access a Gatorlink mailbox, users should have their incoming mail server set to imap.ufl.edu.

For help setting up a mail client, contact the UF Computing Help Desk at 392-HELP.

Mail Messages

We consider the messages themselves to be severally owned by the mesage sender and each message recipient. The data security and availability implications of each individual message are the responsibility of its owners. OSG does not further classify this data.
