Overview Jabber is an open, XML-based protocol for instant messaging and presence. Jabber-based software is deployed on thousands of servers across the internet and is used by over a million people worldwide. The protocol itself is managed by the Jabber Software Foundation. The Jabber protocol can act as a gateway to other messaging systems such as AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) or Yahoo chat. This is possible since the Jabber protocol is completely XML based, and can therefore easily be translated to and from other protocols. Because the Jabber protocol is open, clients have been implemented on multiple platforms. Clients are availble for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. There are also operating system independent clients in Java and Flash. Embedded clients are also availble on small devices such as the Blackberry/RIM and Newton Message pad.
