TSM Config Wizard (Windows)

Definitions

For this procedure, the following definitions apply:

DOM

The policy domain relevant to your node creation. For most local admins, there is only one.

NODE_A.DOM.UFL.EDU

The name of the node you wish to define.

SERVER

The TSM Server instance you are planning to use. For most local admins, the server in question is 'ext'. See the system structure document if you're unsure.

Windows TSM Client Install

In order to have your workstation back up, first the client needs to be installed. Follow these simple steps to install the client on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer.

  1. Acquire the client. There are links to client packages at the NSAM Administrator Documentation page.

  2. Run the setup file for the client.

  3. Choose the location for the files to be installed.

  4. Choose the language.

  5. Click Next until you get to choose the Setup Type. Select "Typical" and click Next.

  6. Click Next. You should now be prompted to reboot.

How to Configure the Client

Now that the client is installed, it needs to be configured to talk to the server to actually back up data.

  1. If the client was installed in the default location, go to C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient and run dsm.exe

  2. Select the Utilities menu from the tool bar and click on Setup Wizard.

  3. Click the checkbox next to "Help Me Configure the TSM Backup Archive Client" and click Next.

  4. Select "Create a new options file" and click Next.

  5. Enter in the node name you registered the workstation with on the server. For this example NODE_A.DOM.UFL.EDU is the node name. Click Next.

  6. Select TCP/IP as the method of communication. Click Next.

  7. The TCP/IP address and port of the TSM server are dependant on which server you will be using. Please make reference to the NSAM System Structure page to determine which address and port are appropriate for you. In this case, we'll use the options appropriate for the 'ext' server.

  8. Edit the include/exclude list if necessary. Otherwise just click Next.

  9. Click Finish.

  10. Now click the checkbox next to "Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler."

  11. Select "Install a new or additional scheduler."

  12. Name the new schedule "daily" and leave the default selection of "Local Machine."

  13. Select the location of the options file for the client to use. If the client was installed with the default settings, nothing needs to be changed.

  14. Enter in the node name that is registered with the server; Leave the password blank.

  15. The logon options should be set to "The System account" and set the service to start "Automatically when Windows boots."

  16. Specify the log files for the schedule and error logs. The default is recommended.

    [Note] Note

If the workstation is not backing up as expected, the error log is a good place to look for clues so remember where the file is saved.

  17. Select "Yes" to start the service upon completion.

  18. Click Finish and the client installation is complete.
